The 1st astrological house shows who you are. That is the self, the house of self.
The cusp of the 1st house is the Ascendant, or it is called the rising sign. They have the same meaning.
The time of birth- the exact minute you took your first breath- is the time of birth and at that time the Zodiac Sign that was rising on the eastern horizon is the rising sign. It is also called the Ascendant, or 1st house. It is the point of incarnation, where and when the soul is incarnated in the body.
Which Zodiac Sign it is associated with?
Aries, as Aries is the first Zodiac Sign of the Zodiac. Therefore its domains are analog to Aries-ruled subjects of life.
Domains and the meaning of the 1st house in astrology
The domains of the 1st house: the body, head, appearance, look, the path of life, destiny, and point of incarnation. and purpose of incarnation. It shows the health, the vitality of the native. Also, it can show fame and what the native identifies with. It shows the first impression the native has. And also, the aura.
The Ascendant shows how others see the native, whether that person looks friendly and approachable, or more aloof and distant.
For example, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, or Neptune in the 1st house makes the native likable, gentle and friendly. Or that is the first impression they make. While Mars, Saturn, or Pluto there can make a person more difficult to approach.
Also, by predictions, it indicates new beginnings– if a planet transits the Ascendant or the Ascendant ruling planet.
Bonus tip: If you want to operate on the highest level and be the best possible version of yourself, aim for the best side of the Zodiac Sign that your 1st house falls in, your Ascendant sign. For example, a Taurus Ascendant person might be stubborn and not so motivated. However, a few of the best traits of Taurus are patience, reliability, stability, and perseverance. The ruler of the 1st house
The ruling planet of the 1st house is the ruling planet of the natal chart. It is safe to say the most important planet.
The ruling planet shows what the native identifies with. It talks about what the native wants to do, and what is their “mission”, why was the native incarnated in this lifetime. Also, it can be a career significator too.
For example, the Ascendant ruler aka the 1st house ruler is located in the 5th house, and the native strongly identifies with the 5th house domains. Such as with their creativity, or works in the entertainment industry or identifies with their performance, or with the 1st child. (As these are the domains of the 5th house.)
Example No2: The Ascendant ruler is in the 7th house, the house of marriage and spouse. The native is known for his/her spouse or getting married and being married is what the native wants the most and invests time and effort in the marriage.
Example No3: Ascendant ruler in the 11th house, house of friends and gains. The native identifies with their friends, wants a big circle of friends, and is gainful.
In a similar vein, the ruling planet of the native also alters the appearance.
For example a Taurus Ascendant person- the ruling planet is Venus- he/she has the typical Taurus look however, the Zodiac Sign Venus is located in alters his/her look. If Venus is located in Cancer, the native also has a Cancerian look or looks more like a Cancer person than a Taurus. Or if for a Taurus Ascendant person, Venus is located in Capricorn then this person also has a Capricorn look, beautiful cheekbones, and good bone structure.
The strength of the ruler of the 1st house
As the Ascendant talks about health and vitality, as it rules the body the ruling planet also talks about the health and vitality of the native.
If the Ascendant ruler is well dignified in the natal chart the native is granted great health and can overcome diseases with ease. And even the self-destructive behavior won’t affect them as badly the native as someone else with a weaker ruling planet.
For example, a Taurus Ascendant person whose ruling planet is Venus, if Venus is placed in Taurus, or in Libra- in its own home signs- or in Pisces- where it is exalted, the native has great vitality. However, if Venus is located in Virgo or in Scorpio the native should concern about his/her health because he/she has a weaker body and a weaker constitution.
Profected years
According to Hellenistic Astrology, every astrological house is associated with a certain year of the native. And it can be used for predictive techniques.
The 1st house rules the first year- from the time of birth until the first birthday, then from the 12th birthday until the 13th, then from the 24th birthday until the 25th birthday, then from the 36th birthday until the 37th birthday, then from the 48th birthday until 49th birthday, then 60th birthday until the 61st birthday, then from 72nd birthday until 73rd birthday, then the 84th birthday until the 85th birthday.
In these above-mentioned years, the ruling planet of the Ascendant aka 1st house aka rising sign is the most important one.
Moreover, anytime a slower moving planet transits the 1st house, such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto the native initiates something new in their life, a new beginning, or changes their appearance.
Angular and Dharma house
The natal chart has two angles. One is the Ascendant-Descendant axis, aka the 1st house and 7th house axis, or called the horizon.
And the IC-MC axis, aka the 4th house and 10th house axis.
In other words, the first house is on an angle, therefore it is an angular house.
Also, in Vedic astrology, it is called one of the dharma houses. Dharma houses are the 1st, 5th, and 9th houses, which are associated with the fire signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
It talks about the purpose of the native, and the path of life the native walks on.
People, area of life of other people
As our lives are not only about us individually, but also about other people. Therefore our natal chart doesn’t only “talk” about us, but also about other people in our lives.
The first house is associated with other people too.
It shows the father of the native’s mother. Because it is the 10th house from the 4th.
Also, it shows the mother of the father’s native, as it is the 4th house from the 10th house.
It also talks about the efforts and skills of the elder sibling, as it is the 3rd house (skills) from the 11th house- the older sibling.
The 1st house talks about the friends, gains, and hopes of the younger sibling. As it is the 11th house- friends, gains, and hopes- from the 3rd house- younger sibling.
The first house is the 8th from the 6th house. Meaning, it shows the reversals of the native’s debts and diseases. The end of the debts and disease of the native.
