Have you ever wondered if relocating to a foreign country is inevitable in your life?
Whether you live a few years abroad as an ex-pat or you spend your whole life in foreign countries. You must have some astrological indicators/ signs for living in a foreign country in your natal chart. The more indicators you have, the more likely you end up living in a different country than your birth country.
Please note that for natal chart reading, I use the Whole Sign House System, not Placidus.
What does a foreign country mean in Astrology?
Well, in Europe, it’s pretty easy to judge. Because if you move a few hundred kilometers away, you find yourself in a foreign country. For instance, in the USA, even if you move thousands of kilometers, you are in the same country. Therefore I would interpret moving between the states as 9th house matters.
What is the difference between the 9th and 12th houses?
9th house is Sagittarius’s analogy. Therefore, every subject of life that is connected to foreign countries is under the domain of Sagittarius. Both Sagittarius and the 9th house show long-distance travel, crossing countries– while the 12th house oversees places, the far-away places.
The 9th house doesn’t necessarily indicate staying in a foreign country until grave. It is an indicator of living abroad, studying abroad, working abroad, or being on a mission. The 9th house’s main domain was the pilgrimage in the past.
And 3rd house is the neighborhood. However, these days the shirt trips and being in the neighboring country or state is a 3rd house matter.
While the 12th house’s domain is the faraway places and Pisces analogy. In the worst-case scenario, it can mean being in exile, being hospitalized, or being incarcerated. Or being in a remote-secluded place, or feeling isolated. The better manifestation of the 12th house is being far away from home.
Interestingly enough, the 12th house is the 9th house- a foreign place- from the 4th house -home.
For foreign relocation, check these astrological houses in your natal chart
1st house is the Ascendant and the path of life, personality
4th house: home, home environment
9th house. foreign country and long-distance travel
12th house: far away places, overseas, isolation,
1st house, Ascendant, the path of life
If the 1st house ruler is located in the 9th house, or vice versa. The native’s life path is connected to foreign countries. To be and live abroad. If there are no other indicators for foreign settlement, it can mean that the native travels a lot but not necessarily finds a home abroad.
If the 1st house ruler is in the 7th house- house of marriage-, the native follows the spouse since the 7th house is the furthest from the Ascendant. Here, the motivation to move countries is to follow the spouse.
Ascendant ruler– 1st house- placed in the 12th house and vice versa, 12th ruler in the 1st house, means the native goes to faraway places.
4th house: home
If the 4th house ruler is in the 9th or the 12th house in the natal chart, the native finds a home in a foreign country. Or the native feels at home in faraway lands.
Having the 4th house ruler placed in the 3rd house is also an indicator of foreign living. The 3rd house is the 12th house from the 4th.
The 4th house ruler in the 7th house is also a sign of finding a home in a far-away place. For two reasons. The 7th house is the furthest from the 1st house. And the 7th house is the 4th from the 4th house. In other words, the real home of the native. In a similar vein having a bunch of planets in the 7th house is also a sign of finding a home in a far-away place.
9th house: foreign country
When the 9th house ruler is located in the 4th house is also an indicator that the native finds a home in a foreign land.
If the 9th house ruler is in the 1st house is also an indicator that the native’s path is strongly connected to foreign countries.
12th house: far away places
If the 12th house ruler is located in the 1st house, it is a sign that the native has a lot to do with faraway places; the life path is connected to overseas countries.
The 12th house ruler in the 4th house is another sign of having a home in faraway places.
Zodiac Signs in different houses
Virgo Ascendant people have Sagittarius in the 4th house cusp. They have easy access to live and find a home in a foreign country– Sagittarius rules everything that is foreign. And wherever Sagittarius is in the natal chart, the native has easy easy access to those subjects of life. And they have better luck abroad too- good luck and fortune also Sagittarius analogy.
Similar to Scorpio Ascendant people. They have their 9th house cusp in the sign of Cancer. Cancer naturally rules home and family. Therefore they might find a home for a while in a far-away place. Furthermore, as Libra- the sign of harmony and balance- are in their 12th house- oversee places. Scorpio people might feel balanced in an overseas country, on an island, or in a secluded place.
Having most of the personal planets or the 4th house cusp in a mutable sign, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces also show mobility and movements of the home. While having most of the personal planets and/or the 4th house cusp in a fixed sign means the native wants a fixed and solid place to call home. Fix signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.
Cardinal signs are different. Having most of the planets in cardinal signs or the 4th house cusp can tell if the native moves away it has a domino effect on their life. It changes everything, a cardinal change. While for the mutable signs, the change is not that significant.
Planets in the 4th, 9th, and 12th astrological houses
The sun and Moon in the 9th or 12th house indicate that the native shines (like the Sun) in a foreign country or far away places.
The Moon shows where you feel at home. If the Moon is located in the 9th and 12th house, that place is not your birth country.
Three or more planets in the 9th house show that in the native’s life, foreign places play an essential role, or the native travels a lot.
While many planets in the 12th house also indicate foreign living. But in this case, they should move. Because when they relocate, their natal chart changes- it’s called the relocation chart- and those 12th-house planets will be placed in either the 11th or 1st house, and the native’s life becomes easier abroad.
Neptune (overseas) and Jupiter (something foreign, opportunity) are placed in the 4th house and are other indicators of living in a different country than the birth country.
Having Uranus in the 4th house indicates that the native “breaks away” from the family and moves to a faraway place from the birthplace.
Aspects
If the ruler of these houses 1st,4th, 9th, and 12th are connected by aspect. The conjunction is the most likely to indicate a foreign relocation.
Another indicator for living abroad for a while is having the 4th house ruler and Jupiter in aspect. As Jupiter is all about expanding the horizon, having a broad perspective, traveling, and foreign matters. If the 4th house ruler and Jupiter are in a harmonious aspect, then the native can enjoy fortunate circumstances or better luck abroad.
If the Natal Moon is aspected by Jupiter, the native has an emotional need to be and live in a different place than the place he/she was born into.
Uranus and Moon’s aspect can indicate that the native might suddenly, surprisingly, “break away” or leave their home to find a home somewhere else.
Rahu, the North Node of the Moon, aka the dragon’s head
Rahu in the 7th house indicates a foreign spouse therefore, the native moves to another country or finds a spouse abroad.
As Rahu can be a foreign influence if placed in the 4th house, it also indicates finding a home in a foreign land.
Please note that I always use the Whole Sign House System, not Placidus, for the natal chart reading.
Gemini and the 3rd house
Having the Moon or the 4th house cusp in the sign of Gemini indicates that the native has two homes or more. As Gemini, the twins- are always more than one. Doesn’t necessarily mean that one of the homes will be in a foreign country. Maybe one of the homes is in a big city while a weekend house or a second home is in the countryside.
Astrological signs of staying in the home country or hometown
If the Moon is in the 1st house or the 4th house. For those who have these planetary placements, the home, origin, and home country play a more important role in their life. As well as having Cancer on the 4th house cusp.
Sun in the 4th house can make the person shine at home or in the home country.
A strong 2nd house can also indicate that the native connects to their roots. 2nd house is the roots, the origin, and the foundation of the person.
Do you have any signs of living in a foreign country in your natal chart? Are you living in a different country than your birth country? Or are you planning to move abroad one day? If you have four or more of these signs of living in a foreign country, you will more than likely relocate abroad or will live in a foreign country for a while.

Hi dear Niki, many thanks for these useful articles, I love them!
My AS is Sagittarius and I have Sagittarius in 12th house in venus, mercury, and true node. I have mars in cancer in 7th house; Jupiter in libra in 9th house along with Libra in Midheaven. I have an empty 4th house but in my 3rd house moon is in pisces. What do you say? I am always in contact with foreign cultures/people. Will I get a chance to live abroad?

Hi Arda, oh wow these are a bunch of indicators for living in a foreign country. Check planetary transits of the 1st, 4th, 9th, 12th houses and their rulers for the timing of a possible move.
With all my love, NIki

Hello Niki, thanks a lot for the great article, as it really clarified many things for me!
Astrologically I do have potentials for relocating abroad, but I’ve never made it so far 😞 However, I do have a lot of professional / business connections with people from abroad.
So these are my houses/rulers/aspects:
4th H in Capricorn >>> ruler Saturn in 9th Gemini, its detriment
this is interesting: 9th H Gemini >>> ruler Mercury in 1st Libra AND 12 H Virgo >>> ruler Mercury in 1st Libra
Ruler of ASC (Libra) Venus, trines ruler of 4th H (Capricorn) Saturn, which is in 9th H, its detriment
Currently, I have transiting Pluto in 4th H, and it will stay there till 2025. Pluto is ruler of my 2nd H Scorpio, and natally it’s in 12H. As much as I know, if transiting Pluto is badly aspected (and mine is, all squares and oppositions to natal planets/points) it’s a sign of “moving/transforming” home. Any thoughts on this one? Thanks!
