The Nodes of the Moon -North Node and South Node
In ancient mythology, a dragon wanted to be like the Gods -immortal. It disguised itself as a beautiful lady and drank from ambrosia, the juice of immortality. The Sun and the Moon noticed the deception and reported it to Vishnu, who severed the dragon’s head. Hence the dragon, drunk from the ambrosia, became immortal. The Gods placed its head and tail on the ecliptic. Its head is named Rahu (in Vedic Astrology) North Node in tropical Astrology. While the tail is named Ketu (South Node in tropical Astrology).
The nodes astronomically are two points at which the orbit of the Moon intersects the ecliptic of the Earth.
The nodes of the Moon travel through each sign in one and a half years. And they are always in exact opposition to each other.
The North Node, aka the dragon’s head (Rahu)
The North Node in the natal chart shows the mission of the soul, which must be fulfilled. If you don’t know anything about your natal chart except the sign position of your North Node, and you act accordingly to it, everything in your life falls into its place.
Moreover, you can even make a social jump with it. Just like the dragon’s intention was to be in the circles of the Gods. Beware not to fake it! Again, it has its shadow or dark side, which can lead to not-so-nice results…
The dragon’s head is without its body. Even though it’s ravenous for whatever it touches, it never gets fulfilled because of the lack of its body.
The North Node shows in the horoscope what we need to achieve and become in this lifetime. However, not with demonic influence -not cheating like the dragon- rather in an honest and truthful way.
Keywords of North Node: ambition, desire, obsession, fraud, fake it till you make it, trickster, fake it, overconfident. dishonesty, poser, ambition, passion, strong desire, privilege, immoral, something the native wants the most to experience, acting according to the goal excuses the means, foreign, poison, haven’t experienced, temptation.
If the native doesn’t have control of that area of life that is associated with the astrological house where their North Node is located, it can be totally out of our control.
The purpose of the North Node: control your passion and desire and give you everything you haven’t experienced. It gives material results and gets better after the mid-30s or for some in their 40s.
The area of life where the North Node falls in the natal chart is the most unfamiliar area. The native has no experience in that. Hence it’s crucial to develop all the qualities the sign has where that North Node is located in.
The South Node is the dragon’s tail (Ketu)
Hence, the dragon’s tail doesn’t have a head it moves without consciousness. Wherever it falls in the horoscope, it empties that area of life that the house rules. The South Node shows precious information about the previous incarnations.
Keywords for the South Node of the Moon (Ketu): ambivalence, spirituality, detachment, separation, out of control, previous lifetime.
The highest manifestation of the South Node is the spiritual influence it brings to the house it is located in. People who successfully develop a detached attitude toward that particular area of life can be geniuses there.
In truth, it is the point where we experience disappointments of some sort. Some people experience it as a disinterest in that domain of life. Because that is the typical ‘been there, done that, got the T-shirt’ point, in other words, the most familiar area.
What have you manifested in those areas of life that are under the influences of the Nodes of the Moon? The North and South Node? Where do you need to be honest with yourself and not fall for temptation?
